South Yorkshire Police Federation
Brief
Kaluna was chosen to modernise SYPF’s logo and brand, as well as design and build a progressive-web-app, powered by a bespoke WordPress content managed system.
The logo mark, and font family
SYPF’s previously used logo presented a few issues—being full of small details that once reduced in size on-screen, lost legibility. To modernise this—we introduced a new font and an updated “logo mark”.
The logo mark takes inspiration from a “life-ring”. SYPF represent members of the South Yorkshire Police Force, and we felt a life-ring was a good icon for the work that SYPF do. The secondary part of the logo, is the checkers. This plays on the traditional use of checkers on Police vehicles. There are 8 “visible” checkers, which represents the 8 areas that the Police Federation support.
Brand colours
We retained the brand blue (“Minsk”) from the existing website, and introduced complimentary blues to give depth. We also inherited the “Curious Blue” from the existing brand palette. We introduced a “Yellow” to be used as a consistent identifier for a call to action.
Website design
SYPF’s previous website featured a left-hand sidebar navigation. As SYPF have an established audience, we made the decision to retain the left-hand sidebar navigation.
The rest of the website follows a clear, consistent flow of repeatable components—allowing the content of the website to flow.
Website development
The SYPF had different challenges to other projects.
Platform
WordPress was chosen due to its intuitive CMS capability alongside it’s REST API resources.
Frontend
The frontend was built using Vue.js + Nuxt, giving a fast, smooth user experience within a progressive-web-app environment.
Features
The website features a bespoke booking system, which harnesses Woocommerce + Woocommerce Bookings. The frontend booking process is completely custom, and features some complex logic when booking a Caravan holiday, or a Sports Therapy appointment.
The website is completely “locked-down”, so a custom registration and approval system was built.
